Best KYC API for Nigerian Fintechs in 2026

How to pick a KYC API for a Nigerian fintech in 2026: the questions that matter, a one-week test plan and where Veris fits, and where it does not.

Best KYC API for Nigerian Fintechs in 2026

Introduction

New to identity verification in Nigeria? Start with our complete developer guide.

Fintech founders and CTOs: pick your KYC API in one week, on evidence from your own users, instead of a sales deck. There is no single best KYC API for every Nigerian fintech, so this guide gives you the criteria that decide it, a test plan you can run and a straight answer on where Veris fits and where it does not.

If you want the question list first, read How to Choose an Identity Verification Provider in Nigeria. This article is the shortlist and the test.

01First, decide what you are buying

"KYC API" covers several different jobs. Name the ones you need.

  1. Record lookup: checking a BVN or NIN against the issuing system.
  2. Document reading: extracting fields from an ID or a bill.
  3. Liveness: proving a real person is present.
  4. Face matching: comparing the live face with the ID photo.
  5. Screening and monitoring: sanctions, watchlists and transactions.

Most vendors do some of these. Few do all, so you may combine two. Veris does jobs 2, 3 and 4. It does not do 1 or 5.

02The criteria that decide it

Score every candidate on the same list.

  • Coverage of Nigerian documents. Does it read the NIN slip, national ID card, driver's licence, passport and voter's card, and the bills you accept as proof of address? Test your own documents, not their samples.
  • Where images go. Are they uploaded and stored, held in memory, or never sent? This decides your NDPA exposure.
  • Pricing shape. Is it per attempt or flat? Are retries and failures billed? Is there a ceiling? See The Real Cost of KYC in Nigeria.
  • Behaviour on bad input. What happens with poor light, glare and old ID photos? Does it fail clearly, or silently?
  • Platform support. Android, iOS, Flutter, React Native, and a plain REST API for your backend.
  • Failure handling. Does the SDK always return a result and never crash your app?
  • Evidence. Can your backend verify a result was real and not replayed?
  • Integration effort. How many calls, and how many vendors?
  • What it will not do. A vendor that is honest about its limits is easier to trust.

03A one-week test plan

Do this with every shortlisted vendor, in their sandbox.

Day 1: set up. Create accounts, get sandbox keys, read the docs. Note how long each takes.

Day 2: your documents. Collect 20 real documents from your team and testers: NIN slips, licences, passports, voter's cards, two or three bills. Run them all. Record which fields come back right, empty or wrong.

Day 3: bad conditions. Repeat with a dim room, glare on laminate and a cheap Android phone. Note which tools guide the user and which just fail.

Day 4: faces. Match selfies against ID photos, including old ID photos and a family member who looks similar. Record scores and how the tool explains low results.

Day 5: attacks. Hold up a printed photo and a photo on a screen. See what passes.

Day 6: failure and scale. Turn off the network, kill the app mid-capture, and send a burst of requests. Note what breaks and what the bill would be.

Day 7: score it. Put the numbers in one table. Price at 1x, 5x and 20x your expected volume, including retries.

Seven days of testing costs far less than a year on the wrong tool.

04Where Veris fits

Veris is a good fit if you:

  • onboard people remotely in Nigeria and want capture, document reading and face matching on one key,
  • want images to stay on the phone, or be deleted after one comparison,
  • want a flat bill with a ceiling instead of a per-attempt meter,
  • build in Android, iOS, Flutter or React Native.

Veris is not the right choice on its own if you:

  • need to look up BVN or NIN records (use a lookup service alongside it),
  • need to authenticate documents as genuine, rather than read them,
  • need deepfake detection or independently certified liveness today,
  • need server-side liveness for a web-only product.

Say that to every vendor too, and see how they answer.

05What waiting costs you

A month of "we will decide next sprint" is a month of onboarding with no live check, or with a stopgap you will have to replace. Meanwhile the test plan above takes a week.

06Why Veris is easy to try

  • Free sandbox with all three products, no card.
  • Free Spark plan to go live at low volume, so you can test with real users.
  • Launch at $19 a month for unlimited captures and scans, with Compare included and a ceiling on extras.
  • Cancel any time, and if your first paid month is not right you can get it back within 14 days by emailing [email protected] (once per account, Compare extras excluded).

07The doubts you probably have

"We have a vendor already." Run Veris next to it in the sandbox on the same 20 documents and compare the results. Start with Compare, which is one API call.

"Is a newer vendor a risk?" Fair. Keep your integration behind one interface in your code, so you can change vendors, and test failure behaviour on day six.

"What if it does not read our documents well?" Then you will see it on day two, before paying anything.

08Your next step

Put Veris on your shortlist and run day two of the plan today. Twenty documents will tell you more than any comparison page, including this one.

09FAQ

What is the best KYC API for Nigerian fintechs?

It depends on which jobs you need: record lookup, document reading, liveness, face matching or screening. Test your own documents and users in each candidate's sandbox, and compare price at your real volume, including retries.

What should I look for in a KYC API?

Coverage of Nigerian documents, where images go, pricing shape and ceiling, behaviour on bad input, platform support, failure handling and how clearly the vendor states its limits.

Does Veris replace a BVN or NIN lookup service?

No. Veris reads documents, checks liveness and compares faces. It does not look up BVN or NIN records, so use a lookup service next to it if your rules require one.

How long does it take to evaluate a KYC API?

A focused evaluation can be done in a week: one day for setup, then your documents, bad conditions, faces, attacks, failure behaviour and a scored comparison.
